From the headquarters of the ALBA-TCP Executive Secretariat, Jorge Arreaza read out the document, where he denounces that this campaign “seeks to tarnish the integrity” of Zelaya’s successful leadership in his nation.
“For more than a decade, he was able to lead the popular resistance against dictatorships and social struggles that led to the recovery of Honduran democracy,” Arreaza said.
In that sense, he indicated that for more than four decades, Zelaya has served the Honduran people, “which in 2006 earned him the presidential election victory from which he developed an outstanding management”.
“Since then, former President Zelaya has been persecuted for having had the audacity to promote the Citizen Participation Law that gave a voice to the Honduran people on issues that for decades were decided only by the political class of that country, as well as for the courage to incorporate Honduras into ALBA, thus inaugurating a new era for his country in the international arena”, he said.
The executive secretary of the agency has stated that the current attacks on the honor and good reputation of Zelaya, his entourage and the government led by President Xiomara Castro are a punishment for disobeying the United States, The Central American country is just over a year away from holding its presidential elections.
“It is a punishment through extortion practices, often used by US agencies that consist of retaining evidence for years of alleged crimes, whose commission has been induced by the same agencies with the intention of making them public at a time when it is more appropriate to harm those involved”, he stressed.
The organization also reaffirmed its commitment to self-determination in Honduras, non-interference and continuity of the democratic system of that country, which was rescued 12 years after the last coup d’état, when a drug-trafficking regime was established.
Last Tuesday, the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, denounced that there is a plan in place to destroy its socialist and democratic government, and warned that «the dark forces of 2009 with the national and international media are reorganizing».
Previously, Chancellor Enrique Reina had denounced an attempt to divide the Honduran Armed Forces (FF.AA.), provoked by comments of the US ambassador in his country, Laura Dogu, who claimed to link the head of the FF.AA. with a suspected drug dealer.
The incident forced the head of state to redouble her efforts to preserve the unity of the FAE, and she decided to finalize the extradition treaty between Honduras and the United States.
